Rocío Márquez and Bronquio debut the show ‘Tercer Cielo’ at Misty Fest with two dates in November

Rocío Márquez returns to Portugal in November to debut ‘Tercer Cielo,’ the multi-award-winning album she shares with DJ and producer Bronquio. The duo will perform on November 8 at Cine-Teatro Louletano in Loulé and on November 10 at Teatro São Luiz in Lisbon. Both concerts are part of Misty Fest.

The Andalusian cantaora Rocío Márquez is one of the leading voices in contemporary flamenco. Her discography reveals a deep love for the tradition of the genre, but also a drive to push its boundaries, exploring new melodies, instrumentation, arrangements, and lyrics.

She gained early recognition in her career in 2008 by winning the legendary Lámpara Minera – the most prestigious award in the flamenco world. Since then, she has performed on some of the most iconic international stages, collaborated with renowned artists like Jorge Drexler, and released five studio albums, all widely acclaimed by both the public and critics. Starting with her debut Aquí y Ahora (2009), her subsequent works – Claridad (2012), El Niño (2014), Firmamento (2017) – chart her ascent.

In 2019, Márquez released the groundbreaking  Visto En El Jueves, an album that reinvents ancient cantes, various palos, and Spanish popular music. The album won the prestigious Les Victoires du Jazz award for Best World Music Album and was performed on several Portuguese stages, including in Águeda (Festim, 2019), Lisbon (CCB, 2020), Porto (Casa da Música, 2020), Funchal (Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, 2021), Lagos (Centro Cultural de Lagos, 2021), and Braga (Theatro Circo, 2022).

The next phase of the Spanish cantaora’s career arrived in May 2022 with Tercer Cielo, an album created in collaboration with electronic music producer Bronquio. The starting point for the new work is flamenco. It features rhythmic, lyrical, and melodic structures from bulerías, rumba, pregón, seguiriyas, tangos, garrotín, milonga, debla, toná, soleá, or verdiales. Each of these palos is then reinterpreted through various styles of electronic music, such as techno, electro, or break. The result is an electrifying collision between past and future that transcends musical genres and was hailed in Spain as one of the albums of the year, ‘destined to mark an era’ (El País, June 2022).

“At the end of the performance, I immediately realized that I had witnessed something revolutionary, something that will undoubtedly leave its mark on flamenco and Spanish music in the coming years.”

Jorge Pinto in Comunicade Cultura e Arte, 2022

“This album is going to change things. It will be a reference and a starting point. (…) It’s a river that carries you, submerges you, immerses and deepens, dragging you through its meanders with a flow of ideas rooted in the past but sounding as clear as fresh water.”
