Simin Tander presents “The Wind” — new album on Jazzland Recordings

German Afghan, Oslo – based singer and composer Simin Tander presents her new album „The Wind“ – an intriguing mix of melodic contemporary jazz, ambient folk and deep groove.

“Simin Tander´s fifth studio album, released by Norwegian Jazzland Recordings, features collaborations with Swedish bassist Björn Meyer, Swiss drummer Samuel Rohrer, and Oslo-based Indian violinist Harpreet Bansal. Together, the quartet weaves a rich, global musical tapestry influenced by Tander’s Afghan heritage and multicultural upbringing, creating an ethereal yet grounded soundscape.

Drawing on the folklore and poetry of Afghanistan, Spain, Italy, England, and Norway, the album’s title, “The Wind”, symbolizes the merging of contrasts—gentle breezes and storms alike—while evoking transformation, freedom, and unity. The album was mixed by twice Grammy nominee Joshua Valleau in New York and mastered by Grammy winner Daddy Kev in L.A.

Simin is being celebrated internationally for her expressive and emotionally evocative voice and music and received the Annual German Record Critics’ Award in 2016 for her ECM album with pianist Tord Gustavsen. Recently nominated for the German Jazz Prize 2024 in the “Vocal” category, Tander continues to captivate audiences- with her powerful yet delicate timbre, an unique approach to vocal improvisation and genre-defying songwriting.

In the past 20 years Simin has performed on the world ́s leading jazz stages, in her own formations and in exciting crossover collaborations with a.o. Jan Bang, Michel Godard, Nils Petter Molvær etc. alongside international movie soundtracks and performances for the UNESCO and UN Women.

«The unique German/Afghan singer Simin Tander’s The Wind (Jazzland Recordings), a mix of originals and Pashto and European traditionals, draws on her tender ballad delivery, wild, wordless improv and percussive exhalations, while Norwegian-Indian violinist Harpreet Bansal and electric bass and drums often kick up hard-grooving storms.»
