Cristina Branco releases her new album “Mulheres de Abril”: an exclusive CD and vinyl edition

Revealing lesser-explored dimensions of José Afonso’s legacy, “Mulheres de Abril” sees Cristina Branco uncover and give voice to remarkable female characters, establishing a dialogue across generations about gender issues in Portuguese society.

The album brings together eight emblematic compositions: “Endechas a Bárbara Escrava”, available today on digital platforms; the previously released singles “Teresa Torga”, “Canção da Paciência” and “De Não Saber o Que Me Espera”; as well as “Canção do Desterro”, “Mulher da Erva”, “Verdes São os Campos” and “Verdade e Mentira”, which will be available digitally on November 28. This selection, the result of meticulous curatorial work, gathers songs in which female figures take center stage in José Afonso’s poetics, exploring multiple facets of the feminine condition.

“Mulheres de Abril” is an album that echoes voices of freedom, intimacy, and resistance. The LP edition was carefully pressed on 180-gram colored vinyl, at 45 revolutions per minute, ensuring a high-fidelity listening experience. The faster rotation preserves every detail, texture, and nuance of Cristina Branco’s interpretation — a piece to be listened to, cherished, and felt with the attention that April deserves.

The songs from this project will come to life on stage in the show “Mulheres de Abril — Cristina Branco sings José Afonso”, with a national tour that includes two major performances: on November 29 at the Auditório Municipal Carlos do Carmo (Lagoa) and on December 17 at Casa da Música (Porto).

Both on record and live, in this contemporary and essential reinterpretation of the work of one of Portugal’s greatest musical figures, Cristina Branco is joined by her long-time musical collaborators, who shape her distinctive sound: Ricardo Dias (piano), Bernardo Moreira (double bass), Alexandre Frazão (drums), Mário Delgado (guitars), and Tomás Marques (saxophone).
