Luca Argel makes his debut as a theatre creator

Musician, composer and performer, and now co-creator of a theatrical production, Luca Argel makes his debut on 6 November with Esquecimento Global, a production co-created with José Nunes. This month, the Brazilian artist will also perform under his own name in Lisbon and Torres Vedras.

Luca Argel’s artistic versatility takes centre stage once again this November with the premiere of Esquecimento Global. The production marks his first experience as co-creator of a theatrical work and further expands an artistic journey that increasingly embraces different forms of creative expression.

Premiering on 6 November at Teatro Municipal de Matosinhos Constantino Nery, Esquecimento Global is an in-house production by the theatre, with text and direction jointly developed by José Nunes, the venue’s artistic director, and Luca Argel. Running until 8 November, the play draws on a free adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera and Chico Buarque’s Ópera do Malandro, creating an original narrative about contemporary Portuguese society.

Writing becomes another field of exploration for Luca Argel, who takes on a creative role in this project that goes beyond music. The original score, also composed by Argel, plays a central role in the dramaturgy, serving as a tool for critical distance and reflection, in keeping with Brecht’s political theatre tradition. On stage, the artist performs the music live, accompanied by a three-piece band, as part of a seven-actor Portuguese-Brazilian cast.

Set against a Portuguese-Brazilian love story and the contradictions of its characters, Esquecimento Global explores issues such as immigration, xenophobia, prejudice, labour exploitation, and the role of the media and social networks in shaping populist narratives. The production revisits the critical dimension of musical theatre, inviting audiences to question the narratives that become accepted as truth through repetition.

On 27 November, the production will be presented at Teatro Municipal da Covilhã.

This debut marks another step in an artistic journey that brings together music, words, ideas and cultural engagement. Luca Argel continues to establish himself as a multidisciplinary artist, finding new possibilities for creation and expression through collaboration and the crossing of artistic boundaries.
