“Canção do Querer”: Cristina Branco authors Festival da Canção finalist performed by João Ribeiro

With lyrics by Cristina Branco, music by André Henriques and Luís Figueiredo, and performed by João Ribeiro, “Canção do Querer” is one of the ten finalists of the 60th edition of the Festival da Canção. The winner will be decided on the night of March 7, during a gala broadcast on RTP1 from 9:00 p.m. onwards. Voting is already open via phone at 760 20 01 02 or online at vote.rtp.pt.

The result of an invitation from the national public broadcaster to Cristina Branco, the song marks the artist’s debut as a songwriter, ahead of celebrating 30 years of career in 2027. In her own words, “Canção do Querer” is “a song of hope”, “a reflection on doubts of faith in Humanity”, concerns that deeply resonate with her. João Ribeiro was chosen as the performer after the singer attended one of the young artist’s concerts in Lisbon and was struck by his “angelic voice”.

João Ribeiro is a drummer and vocalist of the new generation of Portuguese jazz. He completed his studies at ESMAE in 2020 and, since then, has become one of the most active musicians on the Lisbon jazz scene, both on drums and as a singer. In recent years, he has also appeared at several jazz festivals across Portugal—such as Funchal Jazz, Angrajazz, Guimarães Jazz, and Festival Porta Jazz—and performed at venues including Casa da Música (Porto), Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon), Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Guimarães), and Convento São Francisco (Coimbra). In next Saturday’s final of the Festival da Canção, he will perform song number 2 on stage.
