22 May Pedro Jóia Invites Ney Matogrosso to Festa do Avante!
For the first time at the Festa do Avante!, a truly unique encounter promises to become one of the most memorable moments of its 50th edition: guitarist and composer Pedro Jóia invites Brazilian artist Ney Matogrosso for an unrepeatable concert that brings together geographies, artistic languages and sensibilities, a celebration of a long-standing artistic relationship not to miss at the event taking place from September 4 to 6 at Quinta da Atalaia, Amora, Seixal.
On one side, Pedro Jóia — master guitarist and leading figure in instrumental music, internationally recognised for his ability to engage with different musical traditions. On the other, Ney Matogrosso — one of the most intense and charismatic voices in Brazilian music, whose stage presence has become synonymous with freedom, expression and interpretative power.
More than a one-off collaboration, this concert is rooted in an artistic relationship built over many years. Pedro Jóia and Ney Matogrosso have worked together in different contexts, developing a rare musical connection through an ongoing dialogue between Portugal and Brazil.
Their first artistic encounter took place in 2003, when Pedro Jóia invited Ney Matogrosso to participate in the album Jacarandá. The musical affinity was immediate: Pedro Jóia’s guitar found in Ney’s theatrical and expressive voice a space of immense aesthetic freedom. The collaboration quickly evolved into an ongoing partnership. Ney then invited Pedro Jóia to join his band, a collaboration that lasted for around four years. During that period, Jóia contributed to the albums Vagabundo (2004) and Canto em Qualquer Canto (2005), as well as their respective tours across Brazil. In 2017, they reunited for a special concert at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon.
Their reunion at the 50th edition of the Festa do Avante! therefore emerges as a celebration of this artistic relationship, in a concert conceived especially for this stage and promising many more surprises — a rare moment of artistic maturity, mutual understanding and complete creative freedom.
