“Novelaço” revisits the songs that defined telenovelas and became part of the memories of generations. Combining music and storytelling, Luca Argel and Jhon Douglas celebrate the connection between Portugal and Brazil through a vibrant musical journey. The live premiere takes place on October 9 at Casa Capitão, as part of the MIL Lisboa programme.
Following the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, it is now time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of another revolution that left Portugal in a state of collective trance. For six months, people gathered every night in cafés and community centres across the country because of it. Men and women, young and old, rich and poor, left and right, everyone interrupted dinner, work, and even sessions of the Portuguese Parliament to follow this new revolutionary process — this time led by a woman: Gabriela, Cravo e Canela. The first telenovela arrived in Portugal, and we would never be the same again.
Over the past half-century, there has been no more democratic way of telling stories. Popularised in Brazil and later exported on a massive scale, particularly throughout the Portuguese-speaking world, Gabriela was only the first of many titles that left their mark on generations. Even years later, telenovelas leave deep footprints on culture: slang and expressions become part of everyday language; clothes and hairstyles become fashionable; social taboos find their way into public debate; and, above all, new songs become part of the country’s soundtrack forever.
“Novelaço” is a concert-portal, transporting us through time via the most unforgettable songs from telenovelas. Part of a new generation of Brazilian artists who have chosen Portugal as their home, Luca Argel and Jhon Douglas have been reinventing their musical heritage through new influences. In this project, they dive into the most intense point of cultural connection between the two countries. And so, the novela becomes “Novelaço.”
