In 2026, marking 30 years since his recording debut, Pedro Jóia continues to perform around the world. Expressing himself in multiple formats, playing original compositions or tributes to José Afonso, Carlos Paredes, and Armandinho, his guitar playing is at once unique and universal.
Pedro Jóia is one of the most esteemed Portuguese guitarists and composers of recent decades, widely recognized for his singular ability to blend tradition and innovation, establishing an identity rooted in Portuguese music yet open to the world. He began his discography in 1996 with “Guadiano”, followed by “Sueste” (1999) and “Variações Sobre Carlos Paredes” (2001), works that secured his status as a national reference in instrumental music.
In 2008, he was awarded the Carlos Paredes Prize for the album “À Espera de Armandinho”, which will be reissued in 2026 to mark the 80th anniversary of the composer’s death. In 2020, he received the award again for “Zeca”, a tribute to Zeca Afonso. In between, with the Pedro Jóia Trio — featuring Norton Daiello (bass) and João Frade (accordion) — he released “Vendaval” (2017). In 2024, he launched “Mosaico”, featuring collaborators such as José Salgueiro (percussion), Victor Zamora (piano), and José Manuel Neto (Portuguese guitar), highlighting the aesthetic diversity and artistic maturity of his work.
Pedro Jóia has collaborated with artists including Ney Matogrosso, Simone, Gilberto Gil, Ricardo Ribeiro, Raquel Tavares, and Mariza, and has performed as a soloist with orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Quarteto Arabesco. Since 2010, he has been a member of the iconic band Resistência. He maintains an active international touring schedule, with recent concerts in Australia, China, India, Pakistan, South Korea, USA, Uruguay, Brazil, and Singapore, a journey set to continue in 2026.
